‘Tis the season to be jolly’ and there’s lots to put a smile on your face this festive season at the resorts of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate.

Enjoy fun by the sack-full at Dreamland Margate’s Frosted Fairground, opportunities to unleash your inner elf at Christmas themed craft workshops or just chill and soak up the true spirit of the season with Carols by Candlelight with the Locrian Ensemble or watch the Vienna Festival Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker.

The Frosted Fairground, Dreamland Margate (5 December to 2 January)

Dreamland Margate will transform into the Frosted Fairground for their first ever Christmas season.  Their magical winter experience will include Santa’s Grotto and toy workshop experience, Christmas markets filled with the best Kent produce and gifts, festive roller skating round the Christmas tree, and a number of special events including Club de Fromage, The Muppet Christmas Carol film singalong and Christmas cooking demonstrations.

Get into the swing of Christmas a little bit early with Quexmas, a festive craft fair.  More than seventy stalls offering a variety of crafts and gifts, many by small artisan producers, will be spread throughout the Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex House and Gardens.  The Birchington Hand Bell Ringers will be performing some festive sounds to help create that Christmas spirit.

Santa will be warming his toes by the fireside and invites you to join him in the dining room, whilst Mama Christmas will provide festive fayre in the Mama Feelgoods Boutique Café (there is an additional charge for these).

Quexmas is open from 10am to 4pm.  Admission £3 adults (accompanied children under 16 free.


Magical Margate Christmas Hat Workshop, Turner Contemporary (28 November)

Join artist Frances Barry and make your very own paper Christmas party hat with lights. Then, as part of Magical Margate, enjoy the town’s festive parade, watch as Turner Contemporary’s Christmas tree lights are switched on at 5.30pm, meet the cast of this year’s Theatre Royal Margate pantomime Aladdin and sing-a-long with the gallery’s Big Sing community choir, who return for another year to lead the gallery’s Christmas carols.

Workshop is from 1pm to 4pm.  £3.50 per child / free for adults, under 3s and CT9 residents.

Browse around the little stalls at Ramsgate’s Handmade Fair and get inspiration for Christmas.  From ‘MoMo Pixie’ silver and bead jewellery to ‘Loopy Lulu’s’ doggy accessories, from ‘200 degrees and rising’ fused glass and ceramics to ‘Come What May’ nautical, felt, wicker work and home decorations, there is plenty of choice.

And to help get you in the festive spirit there will be Santa’s Grotto, children’s workshops, fancy dress, festive music, mince pies, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.  Plus Santa will be giving a prize for the most festive stall.

Carols by Candlelight with the Locrian Ensemble, Theatre Royal, Margate (3 December)

Firmly established as one of Britain’s most popular touring groups, the Locrian Ensemble have a host of television and film credits to their name, and enjoy “a formidable international reputation”(Evening Standard). In lavish period costume, and in front of an evocative candlelit setting, these charismatic performers perform favourites including carols, string medleys of familiar Christmas tunes, and seasonal surprises. This is the ideal way to get into the true spirit of Christmas.

The Vienna Festival Ballet will sweep you away on a magical adventure in one of the most famous classical ballets of all time.  Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous score and enchanting choreography tells the story of Clara and her enchanted nutcracker doll and their adventures to combat the Mouse King and join the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier on a wonderful journey through the glistening Land of Snow to a kingdom made entirely of sweets.  A Christmas treat like no other.
